چکیده

We present combined Hα+HI rotation curves for a sample of spiral galaxies. Most of the velocity profiles (spectra at single points) in these galaxies are asymmetric, preventing the use of standard methods like the first moment analysis and the single Gaussian fitting. We thus propose a method similar to the Envelope-Tracing method (Sofue & Rubin 2001) to analyse those profiles from which we obtain HI rotation curves in good agreement with the Hα rotation curves. These final rotation curves provide the required high resolution in the inner parts of the galaxies, but also extend out to typically 2-3 Ropt. They will hence allow us to investigate the distribution of dark matter.

The cored distribution of dark matter in spiral galaxies

We present the Hi data for 5 spiral galaxies that, along with their Hα rotation curves, are used to derive the distribution of dark matter within these objects. A new method for extracting rotation curves from Hi data cubes is presented; this takes into account the existence of a warp and minimises projection effects. The rotation curves obtained are tested by taking them as input to construct ...

We present good resolution Hα rotation curves of 6 galaxies: late-type dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies (LSB) for which accurate HI rotation curves are available from the literature. Observations are carried out at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). For LSB F583-1 an innovative dispersing element was used, the Volume Phase Holographic (VPH) with a dispersion of about 0.35 Åpxl. From o...

The Mass Distribution in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

The distribution of the stellar and gaseous components in low surface brightness galaxies has been determined directly from optical and HI imaging. The distribution of what might be the dominant mass component, the dark matter, which is inferred from rotation curves, is far harder to determine. Although the rotation curves themselves can be determined fairly accurately from HI synthesis observa...

Where do the disks of spiral galaxies end ?

In spiral galaxies, the HI surface density declines with increasing radius to a point where it is seen to truncate dramatically in the best observed cases. It was anticipated that if the ambient radiation field is sufficiently strong, there exists a maximum radius beyond which the cold gas is unable to support itself against ionization. We have now succeeded in detecting ionized gas beyond the ...

Dark Matter in Dwarf Galaxies: Latest Density Profile Results

We present high-resolution two-dimensional velocity fields in Hα and CO of the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 2976. Our observations were made at both higher spatial resolution (∼ 75 pc) and higher velocity resolution (13 km s in Hα and 2 km s in CO) than most previous studies. We show that NGC 2976 has a very shallow dark matter density profile, with ρ(r) lying between ρ ∝ r and ρ ∝ r. We carefully t...
